Portland, Oregon is on the verge of a new cultural identity. Demanding the attention of local businesses, cultural institutions, and social programs, residents and planners are recognizing the necessity to rethink the space above the 405 freeway. Our design proposal, ECOTONE, takes the vehicular thruway and repositions it as a pedestrian destination. Currently dominated by motorists, ECOTONE targets local programmatic deficiencies and deploys a framework for community resources, public amenities, and multi-modal pathways.
ECOTONE is as much energy infrastructure as it is landscape. Already strategically situated between two streetcar systems, its visibility and presence promotes participation while attracting new audiences and interest in Portland.
